Parasites in Ontario

Since our arrival in L’Amable, Stubby has been having terrible diarrhea. Maya didn’t eat for 3 days, and is also having some gastrointestinal distress. A few other dogs are skipping meals or otherwise exhibiting potential health problems.

We brought Stubby and a poop sample to our new vet in Bancroft. With the help of a microscope, the diagnosis only took a few minutes. Stubby, and probably most of our dogs, have a parasite called coccidia. We don’t know whether they had this in Alaska and brought it with them, or if they got it en route or upon arrival. Maybe we will figure this out, or it might remain a mystery.

Sulfatrim 400-80mg, daily for 10 days. These tablets contains sulfamethoxazole (a sulfonamide used to treat bacteriological infections) mixed with trimethoprim. Did we ever mention that you should never take medical advice from the StinkyBlog? Here is a link that seemed informative, to us: http://www.capcvet.org/capc-recommendations/coccidia

After a single dose, Stubby got much better: regained appetite, and stopped with the runny explosive poops that Ilana is so talented at cleaning. Did we mention that you CAN get some really good poop stories from the StinkyBlog?

The vet didn’t have enough meds for all 34 dogs, but they are on order. We’ll treat the whole kennel. Somewhat related, we also will get the kennel on monthly ivermectin, on the advice of the vet, to economically keep the gang clear of worms and other parasites.
