Thanks to Anne Titus of Ruby, Alaska for these pictures from Ruby. See the message board for more trail updates. The teams were hoping to leave Ruby today (Sunday) for the 50-mile mush to Galena. Remarkably, that would put them back on schedule. Meanwhile, the two remaining teams are being ferried from Tanana to Ruby (or maybe to Galena?), and snow machiners are hoping to get out of Tanana.

Please visit www.serumrun.org to follow Ilana’s progress in this amazing 760+ mile sled dog journey from Nenana to Nome Alaska. It follows the original 1925 Iditarod trail when serum was transported in an incredible 5.5 days overland, using relays of dog teams. This year’s journey includes 8 mushers and over a dozen snow machiners for support, taking 18 days or so.

I visited Ilana and the crew in Manley, which was a nice trip to the end of the Elliott Highway. More news is on the Serum Run site, including a blog, message board (where you can send messages to your favorite musher: Ilana!), and GPS trackers to follow the expedition every day.

Storm and Simba stayed home, due to shoulder injuries limiting their multi-day endurance. That makes for a team of 10 dogs, plus Ilana and Heather. The dogs are all eating well and doing fine. They are: Decker, Chevy, Nicki, Roo, Higgs, Asa, Rocket, Ahab, Luke and Storm. Weather is fine, and the trail has been good so far.

I’ve heard from the Serum Run organizers that Heather and I have been selected to participate in the 2009 Serum Run. The Serum Run route runs from Nenana to Nome (around 770 miles). Part of the route is the same as the Iditarod trail. Unlike the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest, the Serum Run isn’t a race. Mushers are paired with a snow machine partner. Mileage per day varies with around 25 miles for a short day and 65 for a long day, and the number of days in the field will be between 18-20. Stay tuned for updates!

Oh– Heather is the snow machiner and I’m the musher :)

Patagonia Heavyweight Glove Liners (size XS (ilana) & M (heather))
Dog Coats (Colors: Pink, Red, Blue, Black. Sizes: 1 Small, 5 Medium, 1 Large)
Dog Booties (Medium and Large– we’ll need a lot of booties!)
